Two boats were on patrol on August 2. Forrest M, Eric H and Karl G came across a couple whose motor failed while they were fishing. They gave a text book perfect demonstration of a stern tow and were rewarded at the end with a pretty smile from the young lady involved. (The other boat on patrol was jealous.) Immediately after the patrol they joined friends at Station Georgetown to celebrate Coast Guard day with a pitch-in dinner. Their story of the tow, which of course they exaggerated, was a big hit. |

The flotilla manned several information booths recently, ranging from Surfside to Georgetown. Here are pictures from the booth setup outside Walmart in Georgetown. |

Our last Crew Class of Bruce B, Ron B, Moe D & Angelo S practiced on the water twice and did very well. Here they conduct a Man Overboad Drill. We are happy to report that the fender is in good condition after recovery and did not require Mouth To Mouth Resuscitation. Later on, everyone involved passed their Boat Crew qualification exam. Congratulations. |
| The same Crew Class is shown towing a boat. This was taken on Thoroughfare Creek, just past the popular swimming area on Sandy Island. Notice the heaving line. Also note that the bow is clear so the group is following Standard Operating Procedure. | |

| DSC - Digital Selective Calling. Many radios manufactured since 2003 have the capability of sending personalized information about your boat by pressing one button in an emergency. However, you must have a "special" number which identifies your boat. This is called an MMSI number (Maritime Mobile Security Number). One of the best places to obtain your free MMSI number is at Boat US. |
| If you want more information about what Digital Selective Calling is all about and how your MMSI number is used, go to the Boat US MMSI web site and click on "More". |
| Once you have your MMSI number, you have to enter it into your radio. Good luck. Refer to your radio manual. BE CAREFUL. For most radios, you get two chances. If you don't get it right the first two tries, you have to send your radio back to the factory to get the MMSI entry reset! (Honest). |
| If you want to connect your radio to your GPS, you need to refer to your radio and GPS manual or get one or more dealers involved. Usually, this is fairly easy but can be tricky. Good luck. Please don't ask us, however. Too many combinations of radios and GPS units. |
Coxswains -- Remember to renew your EPIRB registration at least every two years. The link below lets you do this on-line.
EPIRB Registration reminder:
Find the 15 digit Identifier of your EPIRB (e.g. from your original registration) and go to

There is a new Auxiliary Operations Policy Manual available
COMDTINST M16798.3E.
This is MUCH nicer than the previous version M16798.3D which was just crude scanned images of printed pages.
